Summer in Montreal means a flood of local produce becomes available — but markets selling it are more than just grocery stops to grab ingredients to cook with at home. Atwater may not be the biggest (that honour goes to Jean-Talon) but it’s still a popular spot for Sud-Ouest residents and visitors alike to get some local goods.

From small bites to full meals, here are some of the best offerings for something ready to eat at the market (a couple, like Satay Brothers, even have on-site seating).

Headed north to the Jean-Talon Market? There’s a guide for that over here.

A taste of Singaporean street food right here in Montreal, Satay Brothers serve up favourites like steamed pork buns and green papaya salad. The signature laksa, a spicy noodle soup, will likely work up a bit of a sweat —handy for cooling off on a sweltering hot day.

Some have never even heard of Réunion (a former French colony located east of Africa in the Indian Ocean), let alone tasted its cuisine, and Marmite Su’l Feu is a great introduction. Serving up a melange of different curries accompanied with staple rice and beans, the recipes have been handed down from generation to generation.

This dairy bar has been serving up frozen treats during the summertime for over 50 years, in swirl cone, dipped cone, and just plain, creamy soft serve format. La Cabane also has sundaes topped with seasonal fruits, making them about as local as it gets.

Chicken may be king at Roule Ma Poule but the menu also includes the likes of pulled pork and a light, summery niçoise salad that keeps locals coming back. Come the weekend, a Spanish menu is also offered, complete with paella.

This 25-year-old coffee roaster also does bite-sized natas (Portuguese egg tarts) —a solid accompaniment to a cup of joe.

Between flavours like pistachio and dulce de leche (not to mention sorbets including nectarine and masala chai), Havre aux Glaces is a top choice for the very short hot season when this cold, creamy dessert is appealing.

NDG darling Lucille’s Oyster Dive continues to expand year after year, and the oysters and more spot has found a happy home at the Atwater Market, offering a small sampling of seafood and shellfish, affordable oysters, and the ever popular lobster roll.

Possibly the cutest stand at the Atwater Market, Le Petit Sao has been serving up snackable Vietnamese fare like bahn mi and pho for the past three summers. Be sure to try a refreshing homemade lemonade or Vietnamese iced coffee as well.

Les Cochons tout ronds expanded its market stand from Jean-Talon into the Sud-Ouest just last year and it seems it’s here to stay. Here you’ll find a variety of fresh cut meats, alongside takeaway snack items like hot dogs, charcuterie boards, and cornbread.

Meat lovers, rejoice: Aylwin Barbecue offers some of the best platters in the city — many of which boast more cuts of meat than you may have bargained for. Expect chicken sausage, brisket, ribs, and more, all alongside pickles, fresh potato rolls and slaw. More conservative eaters may prefer the grilled asparagus salad or Sunday tacos which are equally tasty, yet not quite so heavy.
