After making these Grinch cupcakes, this Grinch bingo game and this Grinch wreath, I decided to keep going on the How The Grinch Stole Christmas theme and decorated a Grinch Christmas tree for my office. With lots of cute ornaments and a Grinch tree topper, you’re sure to find some Grinch Christmas tree ideas you can use.
Since I’ve been having so much fun with the Grinch Who Stole Christmas theme this year, I decided to keep going…and decorate a Grinch Christmas tree in my office.
I didn’t want to go too literal. So I didn’t do the Grinch legs Christmas decorations that you see all over Pinterest (although the one above is pretty awesome!)
But I did use the red, green and white color scheme with deco mesh ribbon and lots of twirly picks that remind me of a Whoville Christmas tree.
Then I added some DIY Grinch ornaments and a Grinch tree-topper to finish it all off.
I also decided to do all of this on my white Christmas tree since I think it makes the red and green holiday decorations stand out. I think Dr. Seuss would be proud!
How do you make a Grinch Christmas tree?
Now, let’s get on with the steps I took to decorate my white Grinch Christmas tree.
1 | Use deco mesh as ribbon
Note: Sources for all of the decorations are listed at the end of the post.
Since a Grinch themed Christmas tree is a go big or go home Christmas theme, deco mesh makes the best ribbon.
I used lime green as well as red and white striped deco mesh.
Weave it in and out of the branches, pushing it into the tree in some places and letting it come out in others.
Try not to weave it in a straight line. The ribbon will look more natural once you get the ornaments on the tree.
Twisting the deco mesh when you push it into the tree helps to make the ribbon look better.
2 | Add large Christmas ornaments
Next, hang larger ornaments on the tree.
I used some that were red, green, white and black (and combinations of those colors).
Put some further into the tree and some closer to the end of the branches.
Some should go in front of the ribbon and some behind it.
I also like to use these large-sized ornaments to cover places where the ribbon crosses.
3 | Hang smaller ornaments
Fill in the spaces between the large ornaments with smaller ones in similar colors.
I also used some “special” ornaments that are shaped like wrapped presents and candies.
Long thin ornaments help to add a vertical element to the tree.
4 | Stick in some red and green picks
To create a whimsical element that feels like the Whoville Christmas tree, I used a lot of picks.
Some had balls on the ends, some had candy shapes, some were more string like and some were twirls.
But they all add another dimension to the tree.
5 | Make DIY Grinch ornaments
To add a little of more of the Grinch, I made these easy DIY Grinch ornaments.
They’re super simple to do and very inexpensive.
They’re also very light so you can hang them pretty much anywhere, including from some of the picks.

6 | Add a Grinch Christmas tree topper
The final step was to add a tree topper.
Originally, I was going to do one of these big bows in Grinch colors.
But I finally decided to take the easy way out.
And hang a Grinch hand holding an ornament from the ceiling so that it looks like it’s a tree topper.
It’s really supposed to be a door hanger, but I love the way it looks at the top of the tree.
And it’s much easier to make than most other kinds of Grinch Christmas tree toppers.

I love all the different ornaments.
The deco mesh and picks add to the whimsical feeling.
The white tree looks like it’s glowing when the lights are on.
It’s a fun addition to my office decor.
I like it so much, I think I’m going to decorate the rest of my office in Grinch Christmas decor, too!

Weave the lime green and red and white deco mesh through the tree branches.
Hang the large red, white and green Christmas ornaments on the tree.
Fill in the spaces between the large ornaments with smaller ones in similar colors.

Add a Grinch Christmas tree topper. I used a Grinch hand that is supposed to be a wall or door hanging, and hung it from the ceiling above the tree to make it look like a tree topper.
